Jannelle Wheelock: Starting the base












So I went and picked up the wood to start the box that will be below the wheel and hold all the electronics. It was quite interesting trying to bike with it - it was heavier than I expected.

One of the most difficult parts of constructing this piece is that I want to make it so I can take the entire thing apart and collapse it down so I can ship it to California without worrying about it getting crushed.

Todd, at the Boundary Hall wood shop, helped give me advice on the construction of the box, showed me the different tools and how to use them. Thank you Todd!
I started off constructing the pieces for the octogonal shape. I cut all the pieces to size so I could contruct it the next day.

I then moved on to construct the bottom of the box. All the pieces were put through the planar tool, glued together, and left overnight to glue

Janelle Wheelock: 3-D Zoetrope





So my project has been an interesting one so far. I had to animate the expressions, duplicate each head out, prepare all 35 heads for the FDM printer and convert them to STL files. I sent them to the printer and am currently working with Will Gross to configure the motor part of the Zoetrope.
I need the dimensions of the motor and accessories before I can finalize design for the box that will go below the spinning zoetrope part.

Janelle Wheelock: Digital Kiln Formed Glass



Once again we break new ground in our digital applications for sculpture. I thought I would share these images of Janelle's work after they completed their second slumping operation. During the first cycle we didn't take the kiln up high enough. The pieces did not slump completely. The second attempt was a lot more successful. The glass pieces slumped over the ludo molds perfectly. In this process she went from a computer model to a CNC milled wooden form that was then molded using Brush-On 40 urethane mold materials. The ludo was then cast into these molds. Now that is a Digital Application for Sculpture. I will let her talk more about it in her postings.

FDM Project



First pass.... I'm pretty sure this is the model I am going to use.
I am now working on different ideas as far as details.
I just got married in August, and that is where I got the inspiration for this model. The concept is based around the idea of finding the boundaries of between being 'one' together and 'two' as unique individuals.
I think I may get rid of the hair, as it is obvious that they are two different genders. If I decide to keep the hair, I am going to work on remodeling it so it is one with the other piece. I am also considering making the hair porous.
The other thing I am exploring is what kind of a base I am going to give this piece. I want it to be floating, or at least not posted straight down or sitting directly on the base.

So I figured out a composition and was able to fit four of them in the space determined for the project.



So, After I finally received all my fdm printed models I ended up only having one that I was really satisfied with. The four smaller models that I had, with the encasing twirling forms around them ended up being too thin for the bath, and broke apart too easily. The one form that I had printed that was larger and also without the surrounding forms turned out fine. (granted I did peel all the supporting material off myself instead of putting it through the bath..)


SinceI lost all the fdm printed materials that swirled around the figures I tried to recreate the feeling and look with wire. This was the result:

I really liked the way that the shadows look - and might consider displaying this in a way so that only the shadows would be seen - such as inside of an object and backlit so that the shadows would be projected and be seen on the outside.
