Laser Etching!

So this is what I am going to send to the laser printer to etch into acrylic so I can ink it and print it. Two plates in the shape of eggs that have a quote from Tom Robbins on them.

Not a fan of waffles.

I tried waffling two different curves, both of which were derived from my weight loss and gain over 52 weeks. Neither piqued my interest.

I also tried to waffle one of the forms I created for the FDM project. Two many bugs in the script. On left. the contours, on right the waffles with missing surfaces.

alternative rendering

This is an alternative to the polished stainless steel. I though that a high polished rosewood really accentuates the form and would be a great small sculpture for a bookshelf or small table.

This is my rendering of the FDM project. If I could have made it any size or material, I would've liked to use a high polished stainless steel and create a very large sculpture.

Laser Cutting

This was my favorite process this whole quarter! I learned the most about Rhino and I feel like I gained a skill I can use in my future work. My favorite out of the two is the waffle. I would really like to use this process on metal to make jewelry.

FDM Project

Since there were no limitations on our FDM designs, I wanted to take advantage of undercuts and movement. My piece is basically a mock up of what I would've wanted to do if I had the ability to actually make it out of metal. I would've wanted to make this piece very large scale and have it be an installation in a park environment.

Milling Project

When we got the assignment for the milling project, I knew that I wanted to make multiples of my piece. I originally was just going to pay for the material and mill more than one of my pieces, but then quickly decided that I would make a mold. Making a mold allows you to use the computer as a sculpting tool. I never looked at computer modeling before in that aspect, so I definitely wanted to try it out. I modeled my form in Maya, then imported it into Rhino where I boolean differenced my form out of two identical rectangle blocks. I also inserted little pegs to assure that when I casted my form, it would come out the same every time.

Mental Ray

For those of you who like to use Bunkspeed Hypershot. The Maya Mental ray renderer can be used to produce the same types of renderings with a much higher level of control than you will find in Hypershot. Additionally, there are several pre-defined materials that you can use in combination with Gloal Illumination and Final gather to produce these photo realistic renderings.
The renderings above will be fabricated as an FDM model. It will eventually be sprued and cast in Bronze.

SCPT 250/450: Modules

It's a beautiful thing when the computer lab is transformed into a sculpture studio. Students kicked off the laser cutting unit by working in teams on modular sculptures created from laser cut unit forms. Afterwhich, they designed unit forms for their own modular sculptural compositions. Great fun, great high-tech, high touch energy. View more photos here.
